She’s a He

Mario, our baby chick's daddy

This is Mario, our baby’s daddy. We got some fertile eggs from our neighbor who has a rooster, and let our Mama Chicken set on some fertile eggs which she hatched and raised but if you remember, only one hatched.

Wilson, our baby chick's mommy

Not the best picture, but this is Wilson, our chick’s biological mommy. She has feathers that go all the way down her legs and cover her feet. That is where our chick gets them. And other than those feathers on the feet, the chick turned out looking exactly like the daddy. We named the chicken Rose, thinking that she was a hen because of her placid and non-aggressive personality (unlike Snoopy). Well, we were wrong. The last week or so I have been hearing a rooster crowing at about 6:00am, but had dismissed it as the neighbor chickens until yesterday when I saw HIM crowing! So we’ve named him Thomas. The kids wanted to name the baby Thomas (after Thomas the Tank Engine) but I thought that a rooster would be a little more appropriate to name after a toy train ;) He’s a cute rooster and we will be happy to keep him if he can mind his own business and leave my babies alone. Aidan was asking me who Thomas would “breed?” Yeah, not sure about that. He’s a banty so the other hens are probably too big, I just think it was funny that Aidan was wondering about it :)

We are going to the pumpkin patch today with our Homeschool Co-op, the kids are very excited!

That’s the thing about raising farm kids!! They know about stuff like “breeding”. The trick is to make sure they know when it is ( and is not) appropriate to talk about things like that! :)
